DRUDKH (Ukr): "Lebedynyy Shlyakh" cd
(Supernal Music)
If you thought last year's "Autumn Aurora" was good, wait until you hear
this third effort, because this band keeps getting better with each new
album. Now with a bigger and more massive sound, "Lebedynyy Shlyakh"
(The Swan Road) is both faster and folkier overall than its predecessor.
The band retains its BURZUMic roots, however, and in the mixture of
melancholy and pagan folkishness (present in both the acoustic and non-acoustic
parts) there is also a heavy dose of anger, manifest particularly when
blastbeats are loosed upon mankind and the flow of strummed guitars rages
on through their stately chord progressions. The level of musicianship
continues to increase and gain in sophistication; already in "Autumn
Aurora" we encountered skilled leadwork, but this has become a more
prominent feature in DRUDKH's sound, with more frequent instances of
brilliance and obvious levels of professionalism. This is, in fact, a
highly professional release overall, with absolutely nothing to envy
from even established bands on commercial Western labels: not only the
mass of talent, but both execution and production are top-notch. Adding
to the artistry of this album, we find all the lyrics are taken from
the poetry of the famous Ukrainian poet, Taras Shevchenko, included
in a very nice booklet. (While visiting Kharkiv, I encountered a stern
Shevchenko statue, done in dark iron and exhibiting the kind of heroic,
megalomaniacal monumentality we associate with statues of great poets
in formerly ideological states). Radical Europhilia, quality, and
professionalism go together! This album is set for release on 14 March,
but we are already taking pre-orders.
